In Québec City on May 5-7, 2026, we brought together 140 participants to help build the connections that will support better wildfire management in Canada. Read the full recap report for a summary of the knowledge shared and the six key insights that emerged from the meetings.
Researchers combined a literature review with stakeholder interviews to assess how wildfire technology innovations move from idea to field use and to identify when and how innovation stalls. The team traced the system of federal, state, local, tribal, nonprofit, and private actors to locate choke points throughout the innovation pipeline. In parallel, the researchers studied models from four government-led innovation organizations — the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy, the Defense Innovation Unit, and In-Q-Tel — to identify transferable practices to accelerate innovation.

The CIFFC Learning Management System provides online wildfire training, educational resources, and course delivery platforms that support capacity building and knowledge sharing across the Canadian wildfire and emergency management community. The platform supports training initiatives for wildfire practitioners, agencies, and partner organizations.
CIFFC National Situation Reports provide current wildfire activity summaries, preparedness levels, resource commitments, and interagency coordination information to support situational awareness and wildfire response efforts across Canada.
Findings show that fires affecting grassland proximal sites in lower montane forests were historically more frequent than fires occurring in middle montane forests and were related to warm, dry conditions in the fire year and cool, wet conditions in the year(s) preceding the fire. These results indicate that the climate conditions associated with both fine fuel growth and drying are key determinants for fire activity in lower montane forests. The findings provide information important to forest scientists charged with promoting forest health and resilience in the dry montane forests of interior British Columbia.
This article explores how firebreak effectiveness depends on a combination of environmental, structural, and operational factors, including width, placement, maintenance, fuel conditions, and suppression capacity. Historical observations and modelling studies indicate that strategically placed and well-maintained firebreaks can reduce wildfire spread and risk; however, breaches remain common during extreme fire events. Firebrand transport, or spotting, is the primary mechanism by which wildfires circumvent firebreaks, with firebrands capable of travelling distances that exceed typical firebreak widths.
Wildfires in Canada are changing: More area is burning with fewer fires. This research brief highlights how our fire regime is changing, and our whole-of-society approach must also change to a focus on proactive interventions alongside response and recovery.
