Interannual climate variability drives regional fires in west central British Columbia, Canada

This article investigates climate variability and its influence on forest fire occurrence across eight sites in west-central British Columbia, Canada. The research shows that persistent drought is associated with regional synchronization of fire activity between 1600 and 1900 A.D. in west-central BC. The authors found that antecedent moisture conditions were related to local fires, suggesting that the presence of fine fuels and proximity to grasslands are important determinants of fire at the site level within the study region.
